Colour in web pages and presentations - 3

Tips for web pages

eb pages and computer presentations are full of personal choices and preferences, so there really are no hard and fast rules. However, our experiences have provided some guidelines that are useful in most situations.

  • One colour should always dominate a colour scheme, and this should be the colour of the largest area. Very strong colours are eyecatching and will distract your viewers if they are used in abundance, particularly if strong colours are close together.
  • Bold or contrasting colours can be used to draw attention to smaller areas on the page.
  • Avoid using two colours of the same strength together. Each detracts from the other and the effect is confused, rather than highlighting important regions within a page.
  • Darker colours work well for smaller areas such as borders, banners and trim details.
