PSP 7-9: Creating Text as Shapes - Repositioning and Selecting Objects

This rectangle should be repositioned so that the text and rectangle have the same centre. You may be able to do this by eye, or you can use Paint Shop Pro to make sure:

  • Select the Object Selection tool, PSP's Object Selection tool.
  • Click on one of the text letters.
  • Move the mouse pointer over the central circle of the rectangle vector.
  • Read the x and y positions shown at the right of the status bar.
  • Click on a visible part of the rectangle to select this.
  • Move the mouse pointer over the central circle of the rectangle vector.
  • Click and drag the mouse to move the rectangle until the x and y values are the same as those of the text.
  • Remove the selection using the Selections menu (Selections > Select None).

Your image will now consist of two layers: a raster layer containing only the background fill, and a vector layer with the text and rectangle. This is what you want: any distortion will be applied to the active layer, whereas the raster layer will remain unchanged. It is important to make sure that the vector layer is selected before you continue.

Layers of the image

Now for the effects: An inner bevel applied to all letters in the text and the rectangle will add a subtle 3D look. 3D effects can only be applied to raster images, so the vector layer must be converted:

  • Click Layers > Convert to Raster Layer. The layer will be renamed Raster 2.

You will only be applying a bevel to letters and rectangle, so these must be selected. The easiest way to do this is to

  • Select the Magic Wand tool, shown below, from the Selection group of the Tools palette.
PSP's Tools palette
  • Click the left mouse button in the lower section of your image, below the rectangle. The entire area of the image outside the rectangle is now selected.
  • While holding the Shift key, click on the blue background inside the rectangle. Do not click on the text. All the blue area of the rectangle is now selected: inside AND outside the rectangle.

Since you want to select the text and rectangle, rather than everything else, the selection must be inverted.

  • Click Selections > Invert.

The text and rectangle are now selected.
